As i said, "The victor becomes king, the loser becomes a bandit." It’s not about who seeks independence from whom; whoever achieves success in history becomes the legitimate successor. By this logic, Sun Yat-sen was also seeking independence from the Qing Dynasty, but that’s not a reasonable way to frame it.
Yes, but Mao was defeated at Kinmen. So he wasn't the victor - it was a stalemate as the ROC was not defeated (unlike the Qing). And therefore instead of a successor state, the PRC was created as a seceding state - a separatist movement.
